Cipher Case Imran, Qureshi Sentenced To 10 years In Jail

In the cipher case, a special court created under the Official Secrets Act on Tuesday sentenced former prime minister Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to ten years in prison.

The Federal Investigation Agency’s charge sheet in the cipher case claims that Imran never returned a diplomatic document. The PTI has always maintained that the paper was a threat to remove Imran from office as prime minister from the United States.

The PTI is running in the general elections on February 8th despite a state crackdown on the party and without an electoral symbol; the ruling was rendered little over a week ago.

Imran was found guilty in the Toshakhana case on August 5 and given a three-year jail sentence. This is his second conviction. The sentence has been suspended by the Islamabad High Court (IHC). Imran had, however, later had his request for the conviction to be suspended denied by a division bench.

However, Qureshi has never had a conviction before.

Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain of the Special Court rendered the decision in the matter. Imran and Qureshi were given a questionnaire in accordance with Section 342 of the Pakistan Penal Code at the beginning of the hearing.

Imran said, “I have said the same in my statement that I do not know,” when the court questioned him where the cipher was after he had recorded his statement. I had the cipher in my office.

The two were subsequently given prison terms ranging from 10 years to life by the judge.

The judge then exited the courtroom after pronouncing the judgment, to which Qureshi objected that his statement had not been recorded.

A PTI official said that Pakistan supported Imran and Qureshi “who defended Pakistan and stood for ‘haqeeqi azadi’” in a post on X.

The statement went on, “No such sham trial can change what happened in March-April 2022, on Donald Lu’s orders.”

“A total mockery and disdain for the law in the cipher case shall not cause us to lose sight of our primary duty to provide Imran and Qureshi justice.”

In the message, it was requested that people cast ballots on February 8.

It ended, “This sentence will be (thrown) in the dustbin in the appeal stage, and God willing, Kaptaan and vice Kaptaan will be back soon.”

PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan encouraged party members to “remain calm and not indulge in any activity that undermines our traditional stance of a peaceful struggle” shortly after the ruling was made public.

“We intend to appeal this decision in a higher court and carry on with our legal battle,” he said. “We will not let the current Kangaroo Court ruling stop us from adhering to this principle, no matter what,” he continued.

“To guarantee that PM Imran Khan’s nominated candidates are returned to the assemblies with a resounding majority, we should harness and channel these energies for the polling day on February 8,” he stated.

In October, the case saw the initial indictment of the former prime minister and Qureshi, who is incarcerated. They had entered not guilty pleas. The government’s notification of a prison trial was deemed “erroneous” by the IHC, which canceled the whole process.

Due to the previously assigned defense attorneys who had consented to lead cross-examinations not showing up for the next two court sessions, state defense attorneys were appointed last week.

Imran had declared that the trial was a “joke” since the government owned both the prosecution and the defense.

Imran Criticizes “Unilateral” Prison Procedures

The judge closed the defense lawyers’ opportunity to question witnesses in the Toshakhana reference on Monday, while state-appointed counsel wrapped up the cross-examination of all 25 prosecution witnesses in the cipher case. Former prime minister Imran Khan expressed his disapproval of what he considered to be “unilateral” proceedings at Adiala Jail.

The state counsel was assigned on Saturday by Special Court (Official Secrets Act) judge Abual Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain since the attorneys for PTI founding chairman and former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi were unable to cross-examine witnesses in the cipher case.

Ten witnesses had previously been cross-examined by state counsel, compared to four by defense attorneys.

The attorneys for Mr. Khan and Mr. Qureshi engaged in spirited debates on Monday to begin the cipher case hearings, expressing their lack of trust in Judge Zulqarnain. They submitted an application requesting the judge to step down from his position about his choice to assign the state attorney to cross-examine the two PTI leaders’ witnesses.

After hearing the defense attorney’s arguments, the court denied the petition. The court asked Barrister Salman Safdar and Sikandar Zulqarnain, the attorneys for Mr. Khan, if they were prepared to cross-examine the witnesses as he was dictating the order. The attorneys requested that the judge rule on the application first.

In response to the motion being denied by Judge Zulqarnain, the state attorney was ordered to cross-examine the witnesses on behalf of Mr. Khan and Mr. Qureshi. After accountability judge Muhammad Bashir called the hearings in the Toshakhana reference, he departed the courtroom.

Judge Zulqarnain extended the hearings till 11 p.m., at which point the state attorney wrapped up the cross-examination of 11 witnesses, including the former prime minister’s main secretary Azam Khan, the former foreign secretary Sohail Mehmood, and the former ambassador to the US, Asad Majeed.

Judge Bashir of Accountability requested that the defense attorney cross-examine the witnesses during the Toshakhana reference hearing. But Zaheer Abbas Chaudhry, an attorney, showed up in court and presented Wakalatnama from Imran Khan. He told the judge that he needed some time to be ready for the case since he had recently gotten engaged.

However, the prosecution countered that Mr. Chaudhry was the ninth defense attorney to file the Wakalatnama, calling this evidence of deliberate delay.

After the defense team refused to cooperate, Judge Bashir instructed them to cross-examine the witnesses. He then requested Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to record their testimonies under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

In accordance with this clause, the accused may be questioned by the judge “on the case after the prosecution’s witnesses have been examined and before he is called on for his defense.”

A prison official notified Mr. Khan and Mr. Qureshi that they needed to appear before Judge Zulqarnain, who reopened the hearings in the cipher case at a different location within the jail premises, while the proceedings in the Toshakhana reference were ongoing.

Although Mr. Khan was hesitant to come before the judge, Mr. Qureshi did so in order to participate in the proceedings.

Only three court reporters were permitted by the jail administration to cover the more than 13-hour-long cipher case sessions.

Speaking with media representatives, Imran Khan said that the trial’s rapid pace implied that the “match is already fixed.” He declared that US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu is being saved at any costs.

He declared that the current events had tarnished the reputation of the general elections and that he was eager to have talks with the establishment. He said that the arrests of PTI members were the direct result of Pakistan’s chief judge. He said that he would request that individuals who have not shown up for electioneering be the subject of an investigation.

According to the PTI founder, Nawaz Sharif, the supreme leader of the PML-N, came back to Pakistan as part of an agreement with the establishment and still uses a “Vigo vehicle” to get to the prime minister’s office. If granted permission, he threatened to organize the largest demonstration ever.

Retired General Qamar Javed Bajwa, the former head of the army, was allegedly “seeking a deal for the opposition leaders,” according to Mr. Khan, who also threatened to petition the court to call Donald Lu, the military attaché, and Gen. Bajwa as witnesses.

The German automaker expects that the new Mercedes eActros 600, a 600kW, 44-ton electric truck, will “define a new standard in freight transport.”

The eActros’s cab design is heavily influenced by aerodynamics; the front end has an optimized bumper with underbody paneling and a fully closed-off grille.

Aerodynamic efficiency is further enhanced with a roof spoiler and air deflectors on the A-pillars. The front cabin’s 80mm extension contributed to the aerodynamic form of the structure.

A unique 800-volt electric axle and dual-motor system, together with a four-speed gearbox designed especially for heavy-duty long-haul transport, are highlights of the eActros. Peak power output is 600 kW (805 horsepower).

Regenerative braking makes it possible to recover lost electrical energy and refuel the battery, all the while reducing the load on the actual brakes.

UAE Filed $2.8 Billion Lawsuit Against The US For “Dark PR” Misinformation

On Wednesday, a Washington court received a lawsuit from the United Arab Emirates and its strongman, alleging that they funded a “dark public relations” campaign that made up evidence connecting an American oil dealer to terrorist funding.

Hazim Nada, a trader, filed a complaint in the District of Columbia, claiming that the UAE funded Alp Services, a Swiss private intelligence organization, to “seriously damage” his business and image through a broad smear campaign beginning in 2017.

The purported effort against Nada, which was initially revealed by The New Yorker in 2017, sheds light on a burgeoning sector of what security experts refer to as “disinformation-for-hire” businesses, which propagate false narratives and sell influence operations to governments and other willing customers.

The UAE, its President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, often known as MBZ, its national oil corporation ADNOC, Emirati authorities, and Alp Services are among the several parties that Nada is suing.

According to his attorneys, Nada is suing for $2.77 billion in damages related to the campaign that forced his commodities trading company, Lord Energy, into bankruptcy.

Through the Swiss private investigation company Alp Services, “the United Arab Emirates and some of its top officials managed, directed, and bankrolled a years-long ‘dark’ public relations campaign,” according to the lawsuit.

According to the complaint, the UAE and the Geneva-based Alp bribed “journalists” and a George Washington University professor, among others, to defame a number of persons, including Nada.

The complaint claimed that the Swiss company approached the UAE in 2017 and offered to deploy “offensive viral communications” to discredit Nada and dozens of other parties deemed to be antagonistic to the oil-rich Gulf state. The case was based on more than 8,000 documents that hackers had obtained from Alp’s internal computers.

The strategy was to cast doubt on Nada—who was born in Maryland, in the United States—by claiming that Lord Energy was a front organization for the Muslim Brotherhood.

Based on court files, audio recordings, and other documents reviewed by AFP, Alp boasted of its capacity to carry out “disinformation operations” on businesses and individuals, claiming that its clientele included affluent individuals and country governments.

Alp claimed to have bankrupted Lord Energy in less than two years in a conversation with a government official from the United Arab Emirates. Alp’s methods included impersonating Nada in order to get phone records and other sensitive information unlawfully.

According to the complaint, Lord Energy was targeted for elimination by ADNOC and the UAE because they perceived it as a significant financial threat.

The lawsuit claimed that “MBZ had ultimate approval authority over the enterprise’s disinformation operations.”

Beijing Declares It Is Ready to Upgrade the CPEC

In order to modernize the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and hasten the development of an even closer China-Pakistan community with a shared destiny in the new era, China has declared that it is prepared to collaborate with Pakistan.

In a related development, acting prime minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar stated that Pakistan is reaping the benefits of its early harvest projects and is still working with China to carry out the next phase of the CPEC.

“China stands ready to work with Pakistan to deliver on the important common understandings between the leaders of the two countries, deepen political mutual trust, and expand practical cooperation,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said in response to a question during a briefing on Wednesday.

Regarding the recent visit of Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong to Pakistan, he said that the minister met with Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani, President Arif Alvi, Prime Minister Kakar, General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Syed Asim Munir, Chief of the Army Staff, and Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong on January 20–22 to have a thorough discussion on issues of mutual interest and bilateral relations.

The spokesman went on to say that the Chinese minister and Foreign Secretary Syrus Sajjad Qazi co-chaired the fourth meeting of the CPEC Joint Working Group on International Cooperation and Coordination. He stated, “China and Pakistan are strategic cooperative partners that are weather-proof.”

Speaking in Islamabad, Prime Minister Kakar stated that Pakistan is reaping the benefits of its early harvest projects and is still working with China to carry out the next phase of the CPEC, having completed the first phase.

Miss America 2024 Is A US Air Force Lieutenant

After defeating 50 other competitors in the national competition on Sunday, Madison Marsh, a 22-year-old second lieutenant in the United States Air Force and master’s student studying public policy at Harvard Kennedy School, became the first active-duty officer to be awarded Miss America 2024. Madison Marsh represents Colorado.

According to The Post, Marsh was the only Air Force officer serving on active duty to compete for the Miss America title prior to her triumph.

She said, “You can achieve anything,” in an interview posted on Miss America’s Instagram following her victory, as reported by People Magazine. The only person stopping you is yourself, and the sky is not the limit.”

In a message on X, the former name for Twitter, the U.S. Air Force honored Marsh’s accomplishment by calling her “our very own.”

There were 51 participants in the Miss America 2024 final in Florida, representing 50 states and the District of Columbia. Eleven of them, ten chosen by preliminary judges and one chosen by the general public, made it to the semi-final.

Following four tough stages that included a fitness runway walk, a “hot topics” conversation, a talent show, and an evening gown presentation, the semi-finalists were chosen to move on to the next level.

We invited these contenders to talk about what they wanted to achieve as Miss America.

In her discussion of “drugs in America,” Marsh brought up her mother’s battle with pancreatic cancer and the issues of terrorism, technology, nutrition, and climate change.
Marsh gave a spoken-word performance at the talent show on getting her pilot’s license when she was sixteen.

After competitor Samsung’s 12-year reign as the top smartphone, evidence indicated that Apple’s iPhone has finally overtaken it as the best-selling smartphone globally.

Data from the International Data Corporation, which was made public on Monday, indicates that while Samsung sold 226.6 million handsets in 2023, the iPhone sold 234.6 million, taking the lead from the South Korean company.

According to IDC, Samsung has a 19.4% market share, while the US tech giant held a 20.1 percent share.

According to analysts from the widely followed market tracker, Apple’s growth may be attributed to the popularity of high-end products like the iPhone.
