Impact of Budget On Auto Sector 2021-22

The budget for 2021-22 has been revealed, revealing a number of anticipated policy changes. There has been speculation regarding the changes that are expected in the new auto policy, since it has been widely reported that local vehicle prices may finally stabilize.

The government has announced that the Federal Excise Duty (FED) on domestically built cars with an engine displacement of 850cc or less has been eliminated. Prior to the development, the duty rate was 2.5 percent. Federal Finance Minister Shaukat Tareen also stated during the session that the sales tax on the aforementioned sector of automobiles has been reduced from 17 percent to 12.5 percent, resulting in a 4.5 percent reduction in tax rates.

Under these 03 programmed, old and secondhand Asian-made vehicles can be imported against payment of the following amounts:

S.No.Vehicles of Asian Makes meant for transportation of personsDuty and Taxes in US$ or equivalent amount in Pak
01.Upto 800 ccUS$ 4,800
02.801cc to 1000ccUS$6,000
03.From 1001 cc to 1300ccUS$13,200
04.From 1301cc to 1500ccUS$18,590
05.From 1501cc to 1600ccUS$22,550
06.From 1601cc to 1800cc (Excluding Jeeps)US$27,940

According to reports, HM Shehzad, Chairman of the All Pakistan Motor Dealers Association (APDMA), recently recommended that the government make modifications to the new car policy that would be adopted when the 2021-22 budget is presented.

Electric vehicles:

Electric car imports would be free from VAT, but domestically made electric vehicles will be subject to a 1% sales tax.
The government would also levy a “on money” tax on automobiles that are sold without being registered. “On money” or premium refers to a procedure in which anxious customers with extra funds pay a premium to vehicle dealers in exchange for immediate delivery rather than waiting months.

Tarin proposed measures for electric vehicles during his budget address, saying that the government was supporting the usage and manufacture of electric vehicles to reduce reliance on gasoline, offer inexpensive transportation to the general people, and minimise environmental effect. To achieve these aims, substantial tax relief measures for electric cars were proposed, including a tax exemption on the import of fully knocked down (CKD) kits for local electric vehicle production.

In addition, the sales tax on domestically made electric vehicles was reduced from 17 percent to 1 percent, while the value added tax on imported electric vehicles was eliminated. Electric cars will also be exempt from federal excise taxes. Hanif emphasized that tax breaks and exemptions for electric cars will help to create a more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly economy.

Toyota Motor Corporation has overcome General Motors to win the best-seller title in the United States for 2021, a title it had held since 1931, or 90 years. Last year, Toyota sold 2.332 million automobiles in the United States, while General Motors ended the year with 2.218 million units sold.

In 2020, GM sold 2.55 million vehicles in the United States, compared to 2.11 million for Toyota and 2.04 million for Ford. Last year, most OEMs’ production was hampered by a lack of semiconductors, which forced them to concentrate on their most profitable models.

GM predicts increased economic development in the United States to improve overall light-duty vehicle sector sales from roughly 15 million in 2021 to around 16 million in 2022. According to industry newspaper Automotive News, the manufacturer has been the country’s leading seller of automobiles since 1931, when it surpassed Ford.

Toyota, on the other hand, does not believe it is a viable ambition to maintain its sales lead in the United States in the future years, and has no plans to publicize the achievement in any way, according to the company’s Senior Vice President Jack Hollis.

“We appreciate our loyal clients,” he said, “but being No. 1 is never a focus or goal.” Analysts commended Toyota for surviving the chip scarcity better than other manufacturers, resulting in higher sales than the prior year.

Pakistan is Adopting a new law that will Soon Make Cars Without Airbags Illegal.

Pakistan is Adopting a new law that will Soon Make Cars Without Airbags Illegal.

December 28, 2021 / By Zunair Tahir / News Pakistan

The most popular automobiles in Pakistan lack a key safety feature: Airbags.

The federal cabinet has approved the Automotive Industry Development and Export Plan (AIDEP) 2021-2026, which would safeguard Pakistan’s automotive industry’s safety and development.

From June 30, 2022, all automobiles must comply with the WP.29 set of safety rules, or car manufactures will be prohibited from selling them.

Honda’s best-selling car, the City, lacks the safety function. The top-of-the-line vehicle costs Rs2.86 million. Honda comes in third place in terms of vehicle sales, after only Suzuki and Toyota.

The Changan Karvaan minivan, which is in the same category as the APV, does not have airbags.

The Engineering Development Board, the auto industry’s governing organization, was ordered by the Lahore High Court in February to guarantee that vehicle producers manufacture automobiles with airbags.

Automobiles that are deficient in basic safety features:

  • Suzuki Cultus (VXR)
  • Suzuki Alto (VX)
  • Suzuki Ravi
  • Suzuki Wagon R (VXR)
  • Suzuki Wagon R (VXL)
  • Suzuki Bolan
  • Changan Karvaan
  • United Alpha
  • United Bravo

Why are airbags important?

Airbags are meant to reduce the severity of an accident. According to research, those without airbags are more likely to suffer serious injuries. This is why they are regarded as a significant characteristic all over the world.

Airbags, on the other hand, are most effective when used in conjunction with seat belts.

It remains to be seen if automakers will adhere to these safety criteria in future models, given the considerably larger risks. However, it may take some time for firms to properly apply these restrictions, but it is unquestionably a positive move.

The group, which represents automobile makers known as OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), has been given until March 10 to submit its proposal, according to Ayaz.

According to him, the EDB’s safety feature suggestions would be accepted in the future budget. Following that, automobile firms will be given notice to execute them, including the installation of airbags.

According to reports, PAMA Chairperson Ali Asghar Jamali believes that installing airbags in automobiles will raise car costs in the nation. Jamali is also the President and Chief Executive Officer of IMC Toyota.
