Iran & Pakistan Link Their Power Networks To Increase Electricity Trade

March 14, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Pakistan News

LEBANON – According to IRNA, Iranian Energy Minister Ali-Akbar Mehrabian has declared the conclusion of a power transfer line to Pakistan’s neighbour in an effort to increase energy trades between the two nations.

According to reports, the two nations formally agreed to use the aforementioned transmission line on Monday for the exchange of up to 200 megawatts (MW) of energy in the near future.

In a ceremony witnessed by both of the aforementioned men, the aforementioned contract was inked.

On the margins of a meeting with Dastgir-Khan before the signing event, Mehrabian told the press that the 200 megawatt energy transmission line between Iran and Pakistan was planned and constructed in less than a year.

He declared that the line had undergone all required tests and trials and was now electrified.

“There were positive talks about the interchange of power through this connection in today’s meeting with the Pakistani minister of energy,” Mehrabian continued.

The official estimated that the present yearly trade between the two nations is worth over two billion dollars and added that the building of this line will increase the amount of electricity exchanged between the nations to 200 megawatts, which will significantly strengthen the economic ties.

For his part, Dastgir-Khan referred to his earlier visit to Iran, saying that during this trip, “efforts were made to reach a final agreement and the progress of the previous agreements regarding the electricity exchanges between the two countries through the electricity transmission line was pursued.”

He continued, underscoring the significance of strengthening and expanding ties between the two nations, saying:

“It is anticipated that we will observe the growth of energy trades between the two nations with the final agreement following the creation of technical and business teams.”

The two neighboring nations’ energy ministers met for the second time in less than a year at this conference. During his visit to Tehran in June of last year, Dastgir-Khan conferred with Mehrabian.

The Judge Will Not Rule On Imran’s Warrant Revocation

The Judge Will Not Rule On Imran’s Warrant Revocation

March 6, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Pakistan News

According to the PTI chief’s attorney, a private complainant’s warrant issuing has been somewhat delayed.

On Monday, an Islamabad district and sessions court reserved judgement on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan’s application to revoke the non-bailable warrant that had been issued for him in the Toshakhana case.

Lawyers Qaiser Imam, Gohar, and Ali Bukhari submitted a plea in the court of Additional Sessions Judge Zafar Iqbal on behalf of the ousted prime minister.

Imam argued that since the issue of a warrant in a private complaint had been “to some extent averted,” the court ought to revoke Imran’s arrest warrant.

In his remarks, Judge Iqbal said that Imran’s attorneys had informed them that he would not be appearing in court on February 28.

The court then put the decision on hold.
The PTI leader arrived to Islamabad’s judicial complex on February 28 with members of his party to defend himself against allegations of terrorism and illegal finance.

It is important to note that the sessions court is in F-8 Kachehri, which is about a half-hour drive from the courthouse and where the PTI leader had to appear in the Toshakhana reference and an attempted murder case.

Imran’s attorney had asked the judge at the Toshakhana reference hearings to postpone the hearing by an additional five days.

The defence attorney had stated that he was unable to appear in court with the deposed premier. He had however added that if his client was able to escape the courthouse in time, he would show up in court.

When he issued the non-bailable warrants, Judge Iqbal had postponed the hearing until March 7. (tomorrow).

The PTI leader avoided arrest in the most recent incident a day earlier when his supporters stopped the Islamabad police from accessing his Zaman Park mansion in Lahore amid intense drama.

Nonetheless, Imran was given the notice by the police, who gave it to his chief of staff Shibli Faraz, for “compliance” with the arrest warrants issued by the federal capital’s sessions court in the Toshakhana case.

Interbank Rupee Declines By Almost Rs19 versus The Dollar Due To IMF Delays

Interbank Rupee Declines By Almost Rs19 versus The Dollar Due To IMF Delays

March 3, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Pakistan News

On the interbank market on Thursday, the Pakistani rupee plunged drastically by Rs18.74 versus the dollar, reaching a record high of Rs284.85 in morning trade, according to information provided by the Exchange Companies Association of Pakistan (Ecap).

Experts blamed the government’s standoff with the International Monetary Fund for the record loss, which is 7.04 percent (IMF).

According to SBP statistics, the PKR closed Wednesday at Rs266.11 per USD.

“Uncertainty resulting from IMF financing delay”
According to Mohammed Sohail, chief executive of Topline Securities, who spoke to Dawn.com, the recent decline was mostly brought on by a lack of confidence in the currency market due to the IMF’s delayed financing.

The “crackdowns on currency merely reinforced the grey market”
According to Zafar Paracha, secretary general of the Exchange Companies Association of Pakistan (ECAP), Pakistan was urged by the IMF to exchange dollars at the going rate for commerce with Afghanistan.

In other words, they had stated that rather than the interbank rate or the open market, our true rate should be the grey market rate. They are correct since the only location where trading in dollars now occurs is on the black market, he continued.

He claimed that because of limitations put in place by the government on foreign exchange, trading moved to the black market.

The numerous limitations they have placed on foreign exchange businesses regarding the buying and selling of the dollar, he claimed, prevent the currency from rising or falling.

He said that despite government crackdowns [on the grey market], this is still the case. Asserting that carrying out crackdowns would not assist, Paracha urged for a revision of the policies.

“Unintentionally, our policies have substantially aided the grey market. The IMF is aware of this as well, and has advised us to get our exchange rate between the rupee and the dollar to that level,” he continued.

The currency has been plunging in recent days amid delays in an agreement between Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund, which they have been discussing since early last month.

One of the things the IMF wants Pakistan to do is switch to a market-based currency exchange rate system. If the IMF’s board approves this measure, a financing tranche of over $1 billion that has been held up since late last year over a policy framework will be released.

The lender’s requirements are designed to make sure Pakistan reduces its fiscal deficit before presenting its annual budget in June.

But, the budgetary changes required by any agreement are expected to increase the already record-high inflation rate, which reached 31.5 percent in February.

The IMF has also asked Pakistan to increase policy rates and fulfil bilateral and multilateral external funding obligations.

China, Pakistan’s longtime friend, is the only nation to have refinanced $700 million to Islamabad.

At an off-cycle meeting on Thursday, the Pakistani central bank is generally anticipated to increase its benchmark policy rate by 200 basis points, according to a Reuters poll.

Imran Khan Shows Up In Court After A Commotion And Is Granted Bail

February 21, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Pakistan News

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday granted interim protective bail to PTI Chairman Imran Khan until March 3 in a case pertaining to a ‘attack’ on the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) building as he finally appeared before a two-member bench following a day-long drama and numerous court sessions.

The PTI chairman left his home in Zaman Park and took at least an hour to get to LHC after the high court gave him until 5 o’clock in the afternoon to appear before the bench. Imran Khan arrived to the high court accompanied by hundreds of fans who had assembled at the party’s request. The police had put in place strong security measures.

Judge Ali Baqar Najafi, who presided over the division bench, had to instruct the SP Security to accompany Mr. Khan to the courtroom since he remained to remain inside his car on the LHC grounds. According to the PTI attorneys, the petitioner was unable to exit his parked car within the LHC because of the large throng and security issues. At about 7:30 p.m., Mr. Khan then entered the courtroom.

In the FIR filed at Islamabad’s police station Sangjanee under sections 341, 427, 353, 186, 147, 149, 188, and 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code as read with section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997, protective bail was requested in the plea before the division bench.

Imran Khan was offered many chances to come before the bench on February 16, but he chose not to do so. As a result, the petition was re-filed on Monday. According to the PTI attorneys, the petitioner was unable to exit his parked car within the LHC because of the large throng and security issues. At about 7:30 p.m., Mr. Khan then entered the courtroom.

The hearing took place in a full courtroom. While the physicians had recommended him to rest until his final X-ray report, which would be conducted in two weeks, Imran Khan told the judges that his leg injury had improved. The PTI director said that he spent an hour inside the car waiting to appear in court. He declared in front of the court, “I totally respect the courts, since my party’s name is likewise founded on justice.

The petitioner had been wrongly accused of aiding the crime, according to attorneys Azhar Siddique and Khwaja Tariq Rahim who spoke on behalf of the PTI chairman. They claimed that Mr. Khan was hurt in an assault and was unable to appear at later trial court proceedings, leading to the dismissal of the bail due to non-prosecution.

The administration was not pleased at all with how the Lahore High Court treated Mr. Khan since according to government ministers, Mr. Khan’s relief was not extended to everyone.

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif declared during a speech to the National Assembly that “He is an impostor. He caused a commotion in court today by wheeling himself in with private protection present.

The minister gave just a vague indication that a significant event will occur the day after tomorrow. Just hold out until Wednesday, the minister said. Similar criticism was levelled at Imran Khan by Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb for “making a scene” prior to his court appearance.

She said that Mr. Khan incited his supporters to storm the court in case he was detained. She questioned, “Why the relief being granted to him (Imran) is not available to the other accused.

They saw today’s humiliation of the Constitution, the law, and the court system on their TV screens, she said.

She said Imran’s supporters flocked to the LHC building at his command, although he later denied making such a call.

Imran Khan is sought in several court matters, but she emphasized that he has to be detained right away for inciting an attack on the Lahore High Court today.

Imran Khan was granted one more chance by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to appear in person for pre-arrest bail in the issue of banned funding that the Federal Investigation Agency is looking into (FIA).

Salman Safdar, Imran’s lawyer, requested an exemption from the petitioner’s personal attendance on the grounds that the bullet wounds to his legs had not yet healed.

According to a written ruling issued by Justice Saman Rafat, a single judge on the IHC bench, on January 31.

The judge stated in the written decision, “In view of this, petitioner is excused from personal presence before this court for today only with warning of ultimate last opportunity,” adding that no additional exemption related personal appearance would be given.

The order stated, “Learned counsel for petitioner is apprised that no further exemption regarding personal appearance of petitioner in the instant petition for pre-arrest bail shall be granted if on the next date of hearing, i.e. 10.02.2023, if the petitioner fails to appear in person before this court.”

Imran Khan, who is also the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was the subject of a criminal investigation after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) released a fact-finding report on August 2 of last year. Later, the FIA was asked to look into the situation.

After the attempted assassination on him in Wazirabad, it is known that Imran would submit a letter to the investigating officer (IO) to explain his health situation.

According to sources, he would also inform the IO of the extreme security danger and ask that his testimony in the matter be taken at his present apartment in Zaman Park, Lahore.

Musharraf’s Body Is Expected To Be Returned To Pakistan Today

Musharraf’s Body Is Expected To Be Returned To Pakistan Today

February 6, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Pakistan News

Pervez Musharraf, a former military leader, died in Dubai a day ago, and his remains will be returned to Pakistan today (Monday).

Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, a spokesman for the Foreign Office (FO), claimed that Musharraf’s remains were being transported thanks to Pakistani embassies in the United Arab Emirates.

His family has been in contact with our missionaries in the UAE.

Musharraf passed away in Dubai at the age of 79 after a lengthy fight with the uncommon disease amyloidosis. Musharraf, who stole power following a coup in October 1999 and ruled Pakistan until 2008, had usurped power after a coup.

On Sunday morning, the word of his passing first spread on social media before reaching the mainstream media as a result of confirmation from the former army chief’s family and the Pakistani embassy in Dubai. The former dictator’s condition was reportedly in serious condition for the previous few months as his organs began to fail as a result of the terminal sickness.

Musharraf’s remains will be returned to Pakistan today on a special flight where he will be buried in Karachi. A no-objection certificate has also been given by the Pakistani consulate general in Dubai to assist his family’s return home (NOC).

Consul General Hassan Afzal Khan was reported in a media source as stating, “We are in contact with the family and the consulate would aid in any manner it can; the consulate has given the no-objection certificate.”

In 2018, the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) revealed that Musharraf had amyloidosis, a set of uncommon but dangerous diseases brought on by the accumulation of an aberrant protein called amyloid in organs and tissues all over the body.

The former military dictator was hospitalized for three weeks in June of last year, which led to rumor’s that he had passed away. His family had to make a statement to deny these claims, nevertheless.

“I’m going through a tough time when healing isn’t feasible and my organs aren’t working properly. During that time, his family issued a message via Musharraf’s official Twitter account, asking for prayers for ease in his everyday life.

A court accused the former dictator for suspending the Constitution on November 3, 2007, and two years later, he fled Pakistan for medical treatment. He was given the death penalty on December 17, 2019, by a special court convened to handle the ex-high dictator’s treason case. A Lahore High Court bench, however, halted the special court’s ruling.

Islamabad Police Detain Sheikh Rashid In A Late-Night Raid

Islamabad Police Detain Sheikh Rashid In A Late-Night Raid

February 2, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Pakistan News

Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, the head of the Awami Muslim League (AML) and a supporter of the PTI, was taken into custody by Islamabad police early on Thursday.

Ahmed was detained in relation to comments he is accused of making against former president Asif Ali Zardari, in which he reportedly accused him of organizing a “death conspiracy to kill PTI head Imran Khan.”

His nephew Sheikh Rashid Shafique confirmed the event to Geo News, saying that the AML leader was taken into custody from his residence in an exclusive community in Islamabad.

The senior politician was detained as a result of a police complaint made by Raja Inayat-ur-Rehman, the vice chairman of the PPP’s Rawalpindi Division. In it, he claimed that the AML chief had claimed that PPP co-chairman Asif Zardari had received help from a terrorist to kill Imran Khan in a television interview on January 27.

Imran Khan, the leader of the PTI, said in a broadcast address on January 27 that Zardari was behind a new murder plot, or “plan C,” and that a terror organization had been hired for the purpose. He didn’t provide any supporting details for his charge.

Ahmed said that between 300 and 400 police officers stormed into his home, assaulted household helpers, and forcibly removed him.

He said that some [staff members] broke into his home using ladders. He continued by saying that, despite receiving relief from the Islamabad High Court, he had been detained.

The head of AML pledged to take his arrest to court.

He had earlier shared a picture of himself grinning at the Aabpara Police Station on Twitter.

Ahmed said that as the police were trying to arrest him, they looted his home and beat his domestic workers in a video message published by the PTI on its official Twitter account.

He asserted that his attorney Mian Tahir had obtained his release on bail and continued by saying that Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah was responsible for the event.

The AML chairman announced, “The IG has been summoned on Feb. 6,” adding, “justice will prevail and we are with Imran Khan.”

The PTI chairman criticized the action in response to the arrest. Never before in our history have we had a caretaker administration that is so prejudiced and vengeful, selected by the completely discredited ECP. Is Pakistan financially capable of supporting the street movement that we are being pressured to start at a time when our country has been bankrupted by foreign governments? he tweeted.

According to the FIR that was filed against the AML commander, Ahmed’s comment was made as part of a plot to malign the former president and pose a long-term threat to his family.

“He wants to destabilize the peace of the nation by inciting animosity and war between the PPP and PTI with this invented and false plot,” it said.

Ahmed had been asked by the Islamabad Police to appear before it today in relation to the matter yesterday. The notification was, however, put on hold by the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

The Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) shut the two flats of the Ahmed’s Lal Haveli house in Rawalpindi and five surrounding units earlier this week due to “illegal possession.”

Ahmed then protested the action by filing a case with the Lahore High Court, claiming that the ETPB employees were “misusing their authority at the directives of political high-ups.” Admitting his argument, the LHC instructed the board to resolve the ownership of the property within 15 days and reprimanded the ETPB for its confusing position.

On Monday afternoon, a mosque bomb in Peshawar’s Police Lines neighborhood injured at least 90 people, according to emergency personnel.

The Lady Reading Hospital’s (LRC) spokeswoman, Mohammad Asim, told Reuters that the hospital was still receiving injured patients, some of whom were in severe condition.

According to Asim, the area has been totally blocked off, and only ambulances are permitted access.

A part of the structure had fallen, and numerous people were reportedly under it, according to police officer Sikandar Khan.

According to the bomb location, the explosion happened at about 1:40 pm, just as Zuhr prayers were being said. He said that both army and police officials were present inside the mosque.

People were shown crowding around the mosque’s crumbled wall on television broadcasts.

It is now unknown if a bomb was intentionally placed inside the mosque or if a suicide strike occurred.

On the other side, the Red Zone access routes have been closed by the police.

Imran Khan, the chairman of the PTI, vehemently denounced the “terrorist suicide attack” in Peshawar and offered his condolences to the victims’ families in a tweet following the report of the explosion.

He continued, “It is essential that we strengthen our information collection and adequately equip our police forces to face the evolving threat of terrorism.

The previous significant event of this kind occurred in Peshawar last year, when a suicide bomber detonated himself inside a Shia mosque in the city’s Kocha Risaldar neighborhood, killing 63 people.

The PTI spokesperson was taken to Lahore by the Islamabad police and was expected to return to the federal capital on Monday (today) after his tests were completed. He was detained on Wednesday on sedition charges after allegedly threatening members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) during a media discussion.

Before departing for Lahore, Mr. Chaudhry told reporters that authorities were violating his constitutional rights by failing to complete his medical exams. He recounted how Senator Azam Khan Swati and Shahbaz Gill, two PTI leaders, had also been subjected to physical and emotional abuse by police.

His voice would be matched at a forensic lab prior to his photogrammetry test, which will be performed in Lahore.

According to reports, photogrammetry is a science and technology that enables the recording, measurement, and interpretation of photographic images, patterns of electromagnetic radiant imagery, and other phenomena in order to obtain accurate information about real-world objects and their surroundings.

During his first physical remand, Mr. Chaudhry was previously questioned and quizzed.

He was questioned about why he made such a comment about the ECP, its employees, and Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja in particular.

After the former minister’s remand expired today, Judicial Magistrate Waqas Ahmed Raja ordered the Islamabad police to bring him before his court on Monday (today).

However, a top police officer in Islamabad reported that Fawad Chaudhry was not being subjected to the same harsh interrogations as his former coworkers Azam Swati and Shahbaz Gill.

Light diesel oil now costs Rs 187 per liter as opposed to Rs 169 per liter.

Ishaq Dar recalled that the price of gasoline did not increase during the previous four months, from October to January 29. He also said that kerosene and diesel costs have been reduced.

Last week, the Pakistani rupee lost about 12 percent of its value versus the US dollar, while oil prices rose 11 percent globally. On the instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, it has been agreed to make a modest rise in the pricing of petroleum products notwithstanding international prices and currency depreciation, the finance minister stated. Dar stated that the hike is being implemented right away after the oil and gas regulatory authority’s proposal (OGRA).

OGRA claims that there have been complaints of false shortages and gasoline stockpiling in anticipation of price increases; as a result, this price increase is being implemented right away to address the artificial scarcity, the official stated. By 11 a.m., the revised pricing would go into effect in the following two to three minutes, according to Dar.
The minister anticipated that announcing increased pricing would put an end to rumor’s that gasoline supplies were running low. Due to the nation’s oil scarcity, the administration decided to modify fuel prices three days before the revision was supposed to take place on January 31.

Petrol stations all around the country stopped selling fuel on Saturday as a result of rumours that the price of gasoline and HSD will increase by up to Rs80 per litre. Rumors of a significant increase in oil prices for the upcoming two weeks led to stockpiling at gas stations and the artificial closure of more than 80% of gas stations in various parts of the nation.

According to a government source, the government computed the price of oil using oil prices up until October 27 and the average rupee conversion rate of Rs 236 per dollar.

The revised pricing are valid through February 15, 2023.

Fiscal restraint is necessary for the nation’s development and can only be achieved when democracy is stabilised, according to Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, who earlier made this statement at the conclusion of the two-day Bacha Khan Conference.

He stated that we need to stop depending on foreign help. He said that the late Bacha Khan had advocated for using native resources rather than ones that were imported.

Senator Yusuf Raza Gillani, a former prime minister and the head of the Pakistan People’s Party, had before urged adherence to the Constitution to uphold the rule of law and enhance democracy in the nation.
