Wahab Riaz Begins His Responsibilities As Punjab’s Chief Minister Of Sports And Social Affairs’ Advisor
March 24, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Sport News
Wahab Riaz, a Pakistani Test bowler, has been appointed as Mohsin Naqvi’s interim chief minister of Punjab’s sports and youth affairs advisor.
At his office in the National Hockey Complex in Lahore, Riaz met with the secretary for sports for Punjab, Shahid Zaman, and the director general for sports, Mohammad Tariq Qureshi.
In addition to providing a summary on forthcoming events and development work, Zaman and Tariq informed Riaz on future initiatives to promote athletics in the region.
The ex-cricketer-turned-administrator promised that he would do everything in his power to advance athletics in the region.
“To promote athletics in Punjab, we will endeavor to do everything we can. Children should step forward and engage in various athletic pursuits, “said he.
He continued, “We’ll make sure to use all the tools and involve everyone.”
Riaz was appointed sports minister in Punjab’s interim administration earlier this year, it must be recalled. The provincial government granted his request, and Riaz’s swearing-in event was postponed after he asked to participate in the just-completed eighth season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
After returning from PSL 8, the bowler is now serving as the sports minister’s advisor.
In PSL 8, Wahab played for Peshawar Zalmi under the leadership of Babar Azam. Wahab had a year-high 10 catches in 11 games. He has 113 catches overall, which makes him the PSL’s leading wicket-taker.
Rashford & Man Utd Achieved Their Goals In The Second Match Against Betis
March 17, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Sport News
Erik Ten Hag will be happy that there isn’t much to say following the second game of their Europa League round of 16 matchup with Real Betis. Yes, it’s not exactly excellent news for us, but Ten Hag is a self-centered spawn, so he probably won’t care at all. Really, what the audacity.
But everything went as expected. A 1-0 victory was necessary given the number of fixtures United has already completed and the additional work that lies ahead of them. As usual, Marcus Rashford scored a beautiful goal, and Casemiro escaped receiving a second consecutive red card or even the yellow that would have disqualified him from the first leg of the quarterfinal.
Due to the red card against Southampton, Ten Hag was somewhat forced to choose Casemiro and put him on a precipice for 90 minutes. He completed the task.
To be completely honest to Betis, the team has contributed more to the match than the 5-1 final tally would indicate. They start off strong in the first 15 to 20 minutes as they had to do, and if they had scored sooner, tonight might have been more tense. However, neither they nor it did.
Betis made for strong resistance. Not good enough to genuinely extend United, who don’t need any more stretching than is required at this time, but good enough to make the game enjoyable and entertaining.
This was the kind of tie that seriously brings into question the conventional wisdom that having home field advantage for the second match. Playing at home is unquestionably advantageous if your side is clearly better, so long as you handle business the way United did at Old Trafford last week.
Contrast this with Arsenal’s matchup with Sporting; while they should still be alright, they were unable to end the series in Lisbon as they might have done had the first game been played in London.

Contrast this with Arsenal’s matchup with Sporting; while they should still be alright, they were unable to end the series in Lisbon as they might have done had the first game been played in London.
Even though the goal wasn’t especially essential tonight, it did guarantee nothing untoward could occur, and when someone is performing as well as Rashford has this season, you just want it to keep going. It was clear that he was confident in how he took the goal, and it’s one that he never would have scored 12 or 18 months ago.
Given that he had recently dropped a few simpler opportunities, he very well may not have even tried. We keep saying it, but witnessing him perform like this is just so much fun for so many different reasons.
Harry Maguire honored his third England call-up with an unusual 90-minute performance, while Facundo Pellistri made his first senior start and handled the setback of receiving a harsh yellow card admirably. Additionally, Bruno Fernandes had an opportunity to enjoy an uncommon 20 minutes of rest during a demanding season.
Overall, it was a modestly successful evening for United, and at this point in the season, those kinds of performances can have a much bigger effect than they might seem. The treble may not have happened, but it was never really a possibility. For United, this season has already been very good and has the potential to be exceptional.
Liverpool Thrashes Manchester United 7-0, Shattering Previous Records
March 6, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Sport News
In the matchup between the two most successful teams in English football, new records were not the only ones that were broken.
The club’s biggest defeat since 1931, when it lost 7-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers in a game in the second division, occurred on Sunday when Manchester United lost to Liverpool in the English Premier League.
In response, Liverpool won the game by their largest margin ever.
Mohamed Salah scored twice and now has 129 goals overall for the Merseyside club in the Premier League.
“It is incredible that you achieved it today against United with that outcome. I’m returning home to spend time with my family, drink chamomile tea, and rest “After the game, he stated.
Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo both scored twice, and Roberto Firmino added a single goal.
Liverpool scored six goals in a ferocious second half display.
Three players scoring two goals for the same Premier League club for the first time since 1999.
The League Cup victory by United just one week ago was their first trophy since 2017.
Their sobering loss on Sunday, though, put them in third position with 49 points and certainly out of the championship fight, according to Sky Sports analyst and former defender Gary Neville.
Erik ten Hag criticised the “unprofessional” and “inacceptable” performance of his Manchester United players.
“This is unacceptable and a significant setback. I’m quite upset and unhappy about it. This is a wake-up call “the manager of Manchester United stated.
The previous largest victory for Liverpool over United came in 1895, when both teams were in the second tier, with a 7-1 triumph.
With four victories in five league games, the squad moved up to fifth position, three points behind fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur with one game remaining, passing Newcastle United.
Jordan Henderson, the captain of Liverpool, told Sky Sports that it was a wonderful day for everyone. “Today’s performance level from every single player was top notch, which is obviously something we haven’t seen in a while.”
As Gladiators Edge, Iftikhar Ahmed Dazzles Zalmi In A PSL Match Thriller
February 6, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Sport News
Quetta On Sunday, cricket returned to the Bugti Stadium for the first time in 27 years with an HBL Pakistan Super League exhibition game between Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi. The game featured six sixes in an over, a 45-year-old Shahid Afridi batting like a teenager, and a match stoppage before an exciting conclusion.
Given the demand for the eagerly anticipated event, the stadium’s 20,000 seating capacity was insufficient. Those fans that arrived on time had to make it to the arena three hours before kickoff.

Iftikhar goes big in the final over of the innings! š„
They saw a thrilling match between some of Pakistan’s greatest athletes, including current and former national team captains Babar Azam and Sarfraz Ahmed, who were heading Zalmi and Gladiators, respectively.
Iftikhar Ahmed’s performance, which saw the hard-hitting batsman pound veteran Pakistani pacer Wahab Riaz for six sixes in the last over of the first innings to help the Gladiators reach a total of 184 after being put into the batting order by Zalmi, was the one that really brightened the mood at the venue.
To emulate the achievement accomplished by players like India’s Yuvraj Singh and South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs, the right-hander played some incredible strokes. He scooped a full toss behind his knees, pulled over the leg-side, then smashed over the off-side to complete 94 not out off just 50 balls.
In retaliation, Mohammad Haris and Babar of the Zalmi opened the innings and provided the side a quick start, scoring 60 runs in just five overs before Babar left.
That made it possible for Afridi to show up, who immediately blasted a boundary off his first delivery before watching Haris continue to demolish the Quetta bowling. After quickly adding 25 to the total, the seasoned all-rounder lost his wicket.
Zalmi continued to score runs at a steady clip, but they kept dropping wickets at regular intervals. In the last over, which was bowled by Pakistani speed phenom Naseem Shah, they needed eight runs to win.
In front of a supportive audience, the right-armer bowled precisely to allow the hosts to win by three runs by giving up only half of the needed runs.
Even though they claimed to have tickets that were legitimate, people who arrived after the game had begun were not permitted to get through the admission gates. Few of these angry supporters reacted by throwing stones and setting tyres on fire.
The game had to be stopped for 30 minutes as the players were sent back into the locker rooms when a few stones fell into the stadium where it was being played.
However, once the game was reset, there were no simple differences.

The only wicketkeeper-batsman from Pakistan to record a century is Azam Khan.
Azam Khan, a powerful batsman for Pakistan, sets a record during the current season of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2022’s match against Chattogram Challengers.
The first Pakistani wicketkeeper-batsman to reach the century mark in BPL history is Azam Khan.
The 24-year-old scored 109 runs off 58 balls, including eight enormous sixes and nine fours. Another Pakistani player from the other team walked out to bat and scored a century during the same game.
Khulna Tigers scored 178 runs in the first innings thanks to Azam Khan’s outstanding effort.
In response, Chattogram Challengers got off to a quick start and chased down the goal with only one wicket lost.
Usman Khan of Quetta batted superbly throughout the whole innings, scoring 103 runs in 58 balls, including ten fours and five enormous sixes.

India and Pakistan have not met in the longest format of the game since 2007, when bilateral cricket between the neighbours was stopped. The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) is now investigating the potential of staging a Test match between the two nations.
Since hosting Pakistan in a limited-overs series in 2013, the only times India and Pakistan have faced off against one another have been at the 20- and 50-over World Cups and the Asia Cup.
The two last crossed paths at the Twenty20 World Cup in October, where over 90,000 spectators packed the Melbourne Cricket Ground to witness India triumph in a nail-biting final ball contest.
Since 2007, when bilateral cricket between the neighbors was discontinued, India and Pakistan have not played one other in the longest format of the game. The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) is now looking at the possibility of holding a Test game between the two countries.
India and Pakistan have only competed against one another at the 20- and 50-over World Cups and the Asia Cup since hosting Pakistan in a limited-overs series in 2013.
“Cricket Australia has been contacted about it. I am aware that Victoria’s government has done the same. Between the extremely hectic schedule and how much I can grasp, it’s quite complicated. Therefore, I believe that presents the bigger issue.
Fox expressed his hope that Cricket Australia will continue to advocate for the plan with the International Cricket Council, which oversees the sport internationally.
“I believe it would be far better to have a full house and that mood and celebrate the game with full houses,” Fox continued. “When you do see some of the stadiums across the world empty.”

New Zealand team Arrives In Pakistan for Test & ODI Matches
December 23, 2022 / By Zunair Tahir / Sport News
A year after cancelling their tour due to a security concern, the New Zealand cricket team returned to Pakistan on Thursday to play two Test matches and three one-day internationals.
The arrival of the Kiwis follows England’s rout of Pakistan at home in a three-match Test series, which resulted in the dismissal of the host country’s cricket board president.
When they failed to show up to Rawalpindi Stadium in September of last year and said they were leaving, New Zealand deeply infuriated Pakistan.
After Australia’s well-received tour in March, which was followed by two trips from England, they delayed the visit.
The trip will begin on Monday in Karachi with the first Test, which will include the current 15-man New Zealand side, which is coached by seasoned fast bowler Tim Southee.
On January 3, the second Test will begin at Multan. On January 10, 12, and 14, one-day internationals will be played in Karachi.
Hasan Ali, a fast bowler, was recalled to the 16-man Pakistani Test team on Wednesday.
Shaheen Shah Afridi, the team’s spearhead, is sidelined with a knee injury. Pakistan will have the opportunity to improve during the Test series against New Zealand following an embarrassing loss to England.
When a bomb went off outside their hotel in Karachi in 2002, killing 14 people including French naval personnel, New Zealand had to end their tour. In 2003, they went back but skipped the massive port city.
The attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in 2009 made Pakistan a no-go location for international cricket, requiring Pakistan to play home matches at neutral locations, mostly in the United Arab Emirates.
But after significant security upgrades in 2015, international cricket has slowly resumed, and this year has been a busy home season with visits from Australia, England, and New Zealand.
New Zealand Squad:
Tim Southee (captain), Michael Bracewell, Tom Blundell, Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, Ish Sodhi, Blair Tickner, Neil Wagner, Kane Williamson, and Will Young are the members of the New Zealand team.

Luka Modric, who won the Golden Ball in 2018, received the Bronze Ball for third place, Mbappe grabbed the Silver Ball for second.
Kylian Mbappe pips Lionel Messi to Golden Boot
Mbappe won the Golden Boot after his hat-trick in the championship match gave him eight goals, one more than PSG teammate Messi, who had two goals on the day.
