A US jury has determined that Google made its Play Store more popular than competitors’ app shops through illegal means.
Google was sued in 2020 by Epic Games, the company behind the well-known video game Fortnite, who claimed Google had a monopoly on in-app purchases and app distribution.
Installing applications for devices running Google’s Android platform is a common practice for hundreds of millions of users worldwide through the store.
Google declared that it will contest the result.
Wilson White, Google’s vice-president of government affairs and public policy, stated that “Android and Google Play provide more choice and openness than any other major mobile platform.”

“The trial made clear that we compete fiercely with Apple and its App Store, as well as app stores on Android devices and gaming consoles. “We’re steadfast in our commitment to upholding the Android business model and to our partners, consumers, and the larger Android ecosystem.”
Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic, announced that the company will begin working on fixes in January.
“We’ve defeated Google! “The California jury found against the Google Play monopoly on all counts after 4 weeks of extensive court testimony,” Epic Chief Executive Tim Sweeney said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
In the trial that lasted more than a month, the attorneys for the two firms presented their closing arguments on Monday.
The lawsuit also contested Google’s up to 30% transaction fees for Android app creators.
In the case, Epic said that Google’s “web of secretive, anticompetitive agreements” “suppresses innovation and choice.”
Google has filed a countersuit against Epic, alleging that the latter had broken the terms of the developer agreement.
Prior to the commencement of the Epic trial, the tech giant settled comparable allegations from the dating service Match in a number of antitrust proceedings.
A US judge mostly decided in favor of Apple in 2021 after Epic launched a similar antitrust lawsuit against the company in 2020.
