It Might Be Time to Say Goodbye to Apple’s Cheapest iPhone

January 18, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Tech News

It seems sense to want an iPhone that performs almost as well as the iPhone 14 while costing around half as much. Evidently, no. If analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is to be believed, Apple may decide against releasing the next generation of its budget-friendly iPhone SE next year.

On Jan. 6, Kuo stated in a Medium article that “the supply chain has received orders from Apple indicating that the manufacturing and distribution plans for the 2024 iPhone SE 4 have been scrapped rather than delayed.”

The 2024 iPhone SE could have been scrapped by Apple as its Pro line becomes more well-liked

If Kuo’s forecasts come true, Apple alone will be aware of the cancellation’s rationale. However, studies and news reports indicate that there could be a straightforward solution.

The popularity of more costly iPhone models may make Apple feel less motivated to pursue less expensive devices like the iPhone SE. The third-generation iPhone SE, which was released in March, has a starting price of $429 and is effectively an iPhone 8 with an iPhone 13’s internals.

In his iPhone SE (2022) review, CNET’s Patrick Holland dubbed it a “mind-blowing deal,” but he also pointed out missing features that made it feel archaic, like as the absence of a full-screen design or night mode for the camera.

Similar strategies were used in earlier iterations of the iPhone SE; the 2020 model, for example, basically had the same design but used the iPhone 11’s processor. The 2016 variant combined an iPhone 6S chipset with an iPhone 5S chassis. According to YouTube celebrity and gadget leaker Jon Prosser, a speculated fourth-generation iPhone SE would feature a new design that was reminiscent to the iPhone XR.

Think about the modifications Apple just made to its iPhone 14 range to get a sense of why it may have decided to scrap the upcoming iPhone SE. In contrast to the previous two years, Apple did not introduce a more affordable “Mini” model of their brand-new flagship iPhone in 2022. Instead, it unveiled the iPhone 14 Plus, a bigger version of the standard iPhone 14 that costs $100 more than the $799 model. This move raises the entry-level price for consumers.

The move may be explained in part by the fact that more costly iPhones frequently sell well, according to the evidence. According to Counterpoint Research, the average selling price of an iPhone increased 7% year over year in the third quarter of 2022.

Additionally, the market research company stated in June that Apple held a 62% share of the worldwide premium phone market in the first quarter of 2022. Considering that the third-generation iPhone SE starts at $429, it’s vital to keep in mind that Counterpoint considers premium phones to be those that cost $400 or more. However, the research did state that the iPhone 13 series was mostly responsible for Apple’s gain in the premium segment.

According to Josh Lowitz of Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, during the previous two years, the iPhone SE has barely contributed to 5% to 8% of quarterly US iPhone sales. According to Munster, the Pro versions generally account for 35% to 40% of sales of the most recent iPhone models in a given year, while the iPhone SE accounts for roughly 20%.

The $100 price difference, or even a $200 price difference, “isn’t that much each month because you’re paying over such a long period of time,” said Lowitz.

Questions regarding the future of the SE line in general are raised by the possibility that Apple may have scrapped the 2024 iPhone SE. In 2020, Apple introduced the SE logo on the Apple Watch for the first time, and in September, the company released a follow-up to that device.
