In China, Harley-Davidson Reveals The X500 For The First Time
April 22, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Automotive News
It is by no means a secret that Harley-Davidson and the Chinese motorbike maker QJ Motor are partners. The parent business of numerous upcoming brands in the motorcycle industry is QJ, usually referred to as Qianjiang. The Qianjiang empire includes companies with names like Benelli, Keeway, and QJ Motor. It also has alliances with well-known producers like MV Agusta and, yes, Harley-Davidson.
The X500 Is The Newest Model Created By Harley-Davidson In Collaboration With The Chinese Company Qianjiang.
The X 500, a departure from Harley-Davidson’s classic cruiser style and more of a tough, urban roadster, is one of the most widely anticipated bikes to emerge from the Harley x QJ cooperation. The newest model, which follows closely on the heels of Harley teasing the jointly built 4XX with Indian motorbike maker Hero MotoCorp, was formally introduced during the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show.
As would be predicted, the Benelli Leoncino 500, an existing motorcycle in the Qianjiang armoury, and the Harley-Davidson X500 have a lot in similarity. The chassis, wheels, and general posture of the X500 resemble those of the Leoncino 500, therefore the designers at QJ appear to have done very little to hide this fact. The outcome is, next to the Pan America adventure cycle, one of the least Harley-looking Harleys in existence.
Those of you familiar with Benelli’s 500cc twins won’t need an introduction to the X500’s performance. It has a 500cc parallel-twin engine with a liquid-cooled, fuel-injected output of 47 horsepower and around 33 pound-feet of torque. Steel tubular frame, 50-millimeter inverted front fork, and monoshock at the back all support the engine. The front and rear 17-inch wheels of the X500 let it roll along, and the front and rear single disc and twin radially mounted disc brakes help it stop.
The X500’s cockpit is equipped with a semi-digital instrument pod that keeps everything appearing small, if not a bit flimsy. A single LED headlight and a tail light with built-in turn signals are also included on the bike. Other than ABS, the X500 doesn’t have many technological rider aids. We’ll have to wait and see where this new model goes next as the bike has only been shown off in China thus far.
