In the biggest endurance races in the world, the Porsche Penske Motorsport team enters the brand-new Porsche 963 in search of overall victories. Two hybrid LMDh-spec prototypes will compete in both the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the FIA World Endurance Championship starting in 2023.
The racing car, which had its public debut at Goodwood in England, is painted in the traditional Porsche racing colours of white, red, and black. Experienced prototype drivers who have won championships share the cockpits of the 500 kW (680 PS) race cars with seasoned professionals from Porsche’s works driver squad. Porsche Penske Motorsport works in two places to get ready for these missions: The FIA World Endurance Championship and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship are handled by the branch in Mannheim, Germany.
We’re on a very good route after 7,889 test kilometres in the first half of 2022, but there is still work to be done before the start of the next season, says Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Motorsport.
“Our brand-new Porsche 963 should carry on the tradition of iconic cars like the 917, 935, 956, and 962 as well as the 919 Hybrid. I’m certain that we’ll be well-positioned technologically, and we’ve established the appropriate team structures to prepare us for success in the exciting competition between several manufacturers and various models.”
The Porsche 963 will make its official racing debut at the USA’s 24 Hours of Daytona in January 2023. In the interim, testing is permitted as a component of the 2022 world championship events, according to the FIA WEC. At the season-ending race in Bahrain in November 2022, Porsche Penske Motorsport hopes to do a non-competitive dress rehearsal.
According to Urs Kuratle, Director Factory Motorsport LMDh, “Over the past several months, our colleagues at Porsche Motorsport and Team Penske have matured into an effective and dedicated squad — the Porsche Penske Motorsport Team.” “In the four factory cars, we’ll have strong driver teams. The relationship we have with our dependable tyre supplier Michelin and the chassis maker Multimatic is perfect. This fall, the Porsche 963 should receive homologation. We want to continue moving forward with test drives till then and collect more knowledge. We are really eager for our first adventure.”
At its headquarters in Mooresville (North Carolina) and Mannheim, Porsche Penske Motorsport prepares a total of four 963s for the most significant sports car events in the world (Germany). The WEC site in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, was once Penske Automotive Porsche Center and was constructed to the highest industry standards. The data interchange between Porsche Penske Motorsport’s three high-tech centers happens practically instantly. In the fall of 2022, the WEC team will occupy the Mannheim space.
The Porsche 963 is built on an LMP2-category chassis to comply with LMDh rules. The Canadian high-tech firm Multimatic is the supplier of this newly created vehicle chassis. The common hybrid parts are provided by Bosch, Williams Advanced Engineering, and Xtrac. A 4.6-liter V8 Biturbo is the engine’s core component. The high-performance hybrid sports vehicle 918 Spyder serves as the foundation for the engine. Its ancestry may be traced back to the RS Spyder racing vehicle, which was driven to several victories between 2005 and 2008 by Porsche and Team Penske. The winning 956 and 962 classics from the 1980s are the design inspiration for the new Porsche 963. The distinguishing characteristic of the most recent 992-generation 911 is echoed by a continuous strip of illumination at the back.
