EU Fines Intel €376.36 Million For Violating Antitrust Laws In The Market For Computer Chips

September 23, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Tech News

The European Commission has reimpose a punishment on Intel for breaking antitrust laws in the market for computer processors, amounting to around €376.36 million.

The EU claims that Intel’s actions regarding its dominating market position in x86 central processing units (CPUs) prevented competitors from entering the relevant market, which is the subject of the penalties.

READ MORE: Launch Of The Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 For Budget-Friendly Phones

The EU first levied a sentence of €1.06 billion in 2009 after determining that Intel had participated in two particular prohibited practices.

The EU claims they were paying manufacturers to stop the introduction of devices featuring x86 CPUs from other businesses (naked limitations) and granting entire or partially disguised rebates to computer makers provided they acquired the majority of their x86 CPUs from Intel (conditional rebates).

The 2009 Commission ruling against Intel’s rebate practices was overturned by the European Court of Justice in 2022.

But the court ruled that, in accordance with EU law, Intel’s blatant restrictive practices constituted an abuse of dominant market position.

In 2022, the court completely overturned the $1.06 billion punishment on the grounds that it was impossible to determine how much the penalty related to the limitations alone.

According to a statement from the EU, Intel did not appeal the portion of the 2022 judgement that affirmed the illegality of these limitations, allowing the EU to impose a smaller punishment of €376.36 million based on those particular violations.

“Intel bribed its clients to restrict, postpone, or stop the sale of goods containing computer processors from its primary competitor. According to our competition laws, this is prohibited, according to Didier Reynders, the EU Commissioner in charge of competition policy.

He said, “Our decision demonstrates the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that extremely serious antitrust violations do not go unpunished.”

An email asking for comment for this article did not immediately receive a response from Intel.

PCB Is Thinking Of Letting Pakistani Cricketers Play In ILT20

PCB Is Thinking Of Letting Pakistani Cricketers Play In ILT20

May 18, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Sport News

The UAE-based league’s second season will start on January 13, 2024.

The first International League T20 (ILT20), which took place from January 13 to February 12 of this year, did not feature any players from Pakistan.

Top players may earn a staggering USD 450,000 in the UAE-based league’s inaugural season. Shaheen Afridi, Babar Azam, and Mohammad Rizwan, however, may have received up to USD $900,000. A three-year contract and captaincy were also on the table.

Numerous organizations also inquired about Fakhar Zaman and Mohammad Hasnain for the first season in addition to the aforementioned three. Azam Khan was in fact chosen by Desert Vipers for the competition, but the PCB later refused to grant him a No-Objection Certificate.

All of them were informed that they could only participate in the league when they had free time from their national and PSL (Pakistan Super League) commitments. In spite of this, the PCB refused to allow any of its players to take part in the competition

. Ramiz Raja, the then-chairman of the PCB, had further requested payment from the Emirates Cricket Board in return for the release of the players for the league.

Najam Sethi, the head of the PCB at the moment, does not have a rigid position on the ILT20, though. He recently said that it would be impossible to block Pakistani players at this time since the players are also thinking about creating associations to defend their rights during a meeting of the PSL governing council.

According to Sethi, PCB and the UAE have strong connections and can negotiate using the “give and take” philosophy. At the time, it was recommended that the Pakistan Super League (PSL) could begin its upcoming season in Dubai in order to raise awareness of the competition and draw in players from outside.

The PSL franchise owners disagree with this recommendation, though. They contend that the PSL would suffer if Pakistani players were released and the ILT20 was strengthened.

The sources claim that Pakistani cricketers would be seen competing in the ILT20 if the current administration is in place for the next three years.

Montana Will Be The First US State To Ban TikTok

Montana Will Be The First US State To Ban TikTok

May 18, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / World News

In an effort to shield citizens from Chinese espionage, the Montana governor passes legislation banning TikTok in the state.

Montana became the first US state to outlaw the well-known short video app when Governor Greg Gianforte signed legislation on Wednesday banning Chinese-owned TikTok from functioning there in order to safeguard people from suspected Chinese intelligence collection.

Montana will ban Google and Apple’s app stores from offering TikTok within the state, but it won’t punish users who still use the program. The prohibition, which is set to go into force on January 1st, 2024, will almost certainly run afoul of the law.

ByteDance, a Chinese software company that owns TikTok, declined to comment when asked by Reuters whether it intended to take legal action.

In a previous statement, TikTok claimed that the new legislation “infringes on the First Amendment rights of the people of Montana by unlawfully banning TikTok,” and that it would “continue working to defend the rights of our users inside and outside of Montana.”

Over 150 million Americans use TikTok, but there have been increasing calls from US politicians and state authorities to outright outlaw the app due to alleged Chinese government influence over the service.

Teenagers have adopted the app in record numbers. 67% of US youths between the ages of 13 and 17 use TikTok, and 16% of all teens say they use the app fairly daily, according to the Pew Research Centre. According to TikTok, the “vast majority” of its users are older than 18.

Shou Zi Chew, the CEO of TikTok, was questioned by a congressional committee in March about whether the Chinese government could access user data or affect what Americans saw on the app. However, efforts to outlaw TikTok worldwide or provide the Biden administration greater authority to impose restrictions or outlaw TikTok have not gained traction in Congress.

Republican Gianforte said the legislation will advance “our shared priority to protect Montanans from Chinese Communist Party surveillance.”

TikTok has always denied sharing data with the Chinese government and stated that it would not do so if requested.

TikTok may be subject to fines of up to $10,000 per day if it continues to breach the restriction, according to Montana, which has a population of little over 1 million. Fines might also be assessed for each infraction.

On Apple Inc. and Google device app stores, the quick video app is available for download. If they break the law, Apple and Google, a division of Alphabet Inc., may also be hit with fines of $10,000 per infraction, per day.

Requests for comment from Apple and Google did not immediately receive a response.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) denounced the bill as “unconstitutional” and pointed out that, if the courts do not intervene, it will take effect on January 1.

Carl Szabo, general counsel for the business association NetChoice, also berated the new regulation. He said in a statement: “The government may not block our ability to access constitutionally protected speech – whether it is in a newspaper, on a website, or via an app.” He added that Montana “ignores the US Constitution, due process, and free speech.”

Gianforte also outlawed the use of any social media applications that gather and provide personal information or data to foreign adversaries on state government-issued devices. He had hoped to persuade the state legislature to extend the ban to other social media applications that provide specific data to foreign adversaries.

Project Texas, a project being worked on by TikTok, establishes a stand-alone corporation to keep user data from American users on US servers run by US tech giant Oracle.

Nadra Launches Platform For Tracking Sex Offenders

Nadra Launches Platform For Tracking Sex Offenders

May 14, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Pakistan News

To assist people and organizations in locating and tracking those found guilty of sex crimes against women and children, the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) established the National Sex Offenders Registry (NSOR) platform in conjunction with an SMS verification service.

It is an ever-changing database of sexual offenders. Links with various law enforcement agencies and provincial governments have been created to provide for real-time updates.

This change aims to increase the service’s flexibility and responsiveness to institutional and societal demands for sexual assault and abuse prevention.

Citizens, employers, and government agencies will be made aware of these offenders thanks to an SMS-based verification program.

Chairman of Nadra Tariq Malik said, “This initiative has always remained close to my heart, which is a critical step towards safeguarding women and children from sexual violence and abuse.”

Action Taken To Stop Sexual Assault And Abuse

In order to guarantee that those recruited for domestic duties, at mosques, colleges or universities, or for any other work, are not sexual offenders, have a clean criminal record, and can be trusted around women and children, he declared that residents may now utilize this service to check the CNIC number of potential employees.

According to Mr. Malik, stopping even one case of sexual assault against a kid or a woman is an investment in the future of our nation as well as an act of protection.

Our country has to take this obligation to the least of the poor seriously.

“We must acknowledge that stopping child and women sexual abuse requires more than simply punishing perpetrators; it also requires fostering an environment of safety and protection for the most vulnerable populations [children and women]. Only then can we guarantee that the following generation has the chance to prosper.

This service’s goal is to make information on sex offenders accessible to institutions and individuals right away.

Additionally, the information may be utilized to track down criminals so that they can be prosecuted for their crimes and prevented from doing them again.

Citizens can check if a potential employee is a convicted sex offender by submitting a 13-digit CNIC number to the SMS short code 7000 once the applicant provides their CNIC. After authentication, a message in Urdu saying “Beware! prisoner is XYZ’s son ABC. Keep him away from women and children.

PTI Reiterates Calls For An Inquiry As Audio Leaks Keep Coming

PTI Reiterates Calls For An Inquiry As Audio Leaks Keep Coming

April 23, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Pakistan News

The PTI reiterated its requests for an inquiry into these clips on Sunday and urged the Supreme Court to take note of the leaks as audio tapes purporting to show private telephone conversations of prominent figures continue to surface.

Recently, a number of audio leaks on social media have appeared that include important members of the government and opposition, such as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, PTI Chairman Imran Khan, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, and others.

The tapes, which appeared to show casual discussions, have caused significant worries about the security of government buildings, especially the Prime Minister’s Office.

The release of audio leaks was described by PM Shehbaz as a “very serious lapse” and a high-level committee was to be established to look into the situation.

The PTI, on the other hand, has submitted a plea to the SC asking for an investigation into the audios. The former prime minister Imran Khan also requested “enforcement” of the public’s basic rights in a letter to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Umar Ata Bandial, and other SC judges, including Article 14 of the Constitution (the fundamental right to privacy).

An audio tape that supposedly included the wife of a PTI lawyer and the mother-in-law of a prominent SC judge first surfaced on social media earlier today. The women were heard discussing a well-known case that the supreme court is now hearing on the recordings.

A high-level committee was to be constituted to investigate what PM Shehbaz called a “very serious lapse” in the dissemination of audio leaks.

Fawad Chaudhry, a leader of the PTI and a former minister, said that his party has repeatedly pushed the SC to look into the series of leaks, describing them as “disastrous.”

We constantly asked the Supreme Court to look into this series when audio recordings from the Prime Minister’s Office and Prime Minister’s House were made public, he tweeted. “How will anyone else in the country be safe if the prime minister’s office is not secure and audios are being recorded there?”

Fawad mentioned PTI’s suit over the audio leaks and stated that even after all these months, a hearing date had not been set.

He added that “such illegal phone tapping is punishable by up to three years in prison under the fair trial law,” and that “now, judges, politicians, civil servants, and even housewives are becoming victims of this third-class thinking and no one can do anything about it.”

Shireen Mazari, a former minister for human rights, claimed that audio leaks of people’s private conversations demonstrated the “depravity, desperation, and insanity the deep state and its puppet PDM regime are delving into with impunity.”

Apple Launches New M2 Pro & M2 Max Chips In The MacBook Pro & Mac Mini

Apple Launches New M2 Pro & M2 Max Chips In The MacBook Pro & Mac Mini

January 18, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Tech News

The M2 Pro and M2 Max versions of Apple’s M-series processors have been added, and the upgraded 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models as well as the Mac Mini desktop are now available with these chips.

According to Apple, the M2 Pro architecture is scaled up to provide up to a 32GB of rapid unified memory, a 12-core CPU, and a 19-core GPU. The features of M2 Pro are expanded upon by M2 Max, which offers a GPU with up to 38 cores, twice the unified memory bandwidth, and up to 96GB of unified memory.

The latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBooks promise battery life up to 22 hours and add Wi-Fi 6E

The M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max CPUs from the older models have been replaced by the new chips in the new MacBooks and Mac Mini, which have the same design as their predecessors. The M1 Pro and M1 Max variants of the MacBook Pro as well as the M1 Mac Mini have all been tested and reviewed in the past.

M2 Pro/Max added to MacBook Pro

When the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro computers were introduced in October 2021, a change from the prior MacBooks’ softly bent lids to a more structured, squared-off form with a flat lid and sharp corners became apparent. These computers also lacked the touch bar interface found on earlier MacBook Pro models; only the 2022 M2 13-inch MacBook Pro retains this functionality along with the vintage appearance and feel (for now).

Apple’s claim of a battery life of up to 22 hours—the “longest battery life ever in a Mac”—is the largest change, aside from the processor generation. Additionally, the MacBook Pro upgrades its Wi-Fi to Wi-Fi 6E from Wi-Fi 6 and has an HDMI connector that now supports 4K and 8K screens at up to 240Hz and 60Hz, respectively.

According to Apple, the M2 Pro processor does image processing in Photoshop up to 40% quicker than the M1 Pro, while the M2 Max can render effects in Cinema 4D and color grade in DaVinci Resolve up to 30% faster than the M1 Max.

Price:

The price for the new 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro starts at $2,499 (£2,699, AU$3,999), while the price for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro is $1,999 (£2,149, AU$3,199).

The First Upgrade To The Mac Mini Since 2020

The M1 CPU, which eschewed Intel, was added to the Mac Mini at its most recent version in 2020. The M2 and M2 Pro chips are both available in the updated version.

According to Apple, the M2 version of Photoshop can perform up to 50% quicker than the M1 version, while the M2 Pro edition of Final Cut Pro can transcode up to 4.2 times faster than the M1 Mac Mini. There wasn’t a Mac Mini M1 Pro version available for direct comparison.

A variant of the Intel Mac Mini, which was still available (along with the M1 version) until this announcement, has likewise been discontinued by Apple. The only remaining Intel-based Mac that you can buy straight from Apple is the Mac Studio desktop. If you really, certainly must have one, several merchants, like Best Buy, still carry the Intel Mac Mini.

For the M2 version of the new model, prices begin at $599 (£649, AU$999), and for the M2 Pro version, they start at $1,299 (£1,399, AU$1,999).

The new Mac Mini and MacBook Pro will both be available for pre-order starting on January 17 and will begin shipping to consumers and retail locations on January 24.

The 24-inch iMac, the Mac Studio, and the Mac Pro desktop are further items that might potentially receive M2, M2 Pro, or M2 Max processor improvements later in 2022.

And no, there isn’t a touchscreen yet, despite some recent speculations.

Ken Block, A Rally Driver & YouTube Celebrity, Dies In A Snowmobile Accident

Ken Block, A Rally Driver & YouTube Celebrity, Dies In A Snowmobile Accident

January 3, 2023 / By Zunair Tahir / Automotive News

Block gained popularity outside of rallies by posting internet footage of his daring acts.

Ken Block, a professional rally driver who subsequently rose to fame online for his risky on-track antics, passed away at the age of 55 following a snowmobile accident, according to his organisation Hoonigan Racing.

Hoonigan released a statement on Monday that was shared on Instagram. “It is with the utmost grief that we can report that Ken Block went tragically in a snowmobile accident today,” the statement said.

“Ken was a pioneer, an icon, and a visionary. And last but not least, a husband and father. Extremely, he will be missed.

Wasatch County in Utah is where the incident took place. Block was travelling on a steep hill, according to the local sheriff’s office, when the snowmobile overturned and fell on top of him.

He was riding alone but in a group when the accident happened, they added, and “he was pronounced deceased at the spot from injuries incurred in the accident.”

Block started his rallying career in 2005 and won the Rally America Championship’s Rookie of the Year award. He participated in the World Rally Championship and took home multiple gold for rallycross at the X Games.

The American created the Gymkhana film series, in which he drove over perilous roads and obstacle courses, as well as the athletic apparel firm DC Shoes. On YouTube, the series received millions of views.

He made an episode of the BBC’s newly revived Top Gear in 2016, travelling about London with presenter and actor Matt LeBlanc. When it was reported that Block and LeBlanc had executed burnouts, wheelspins, and doughnuts while driving along Whitehall near monuments like the Cenotaph, the debate surrounding their presence came to a head.

Later, the BBC acknowledged, and the Cenotaph film was never shown.
