F1 Will Not Replace Russian GP As 2022 Calendar Stays At 22 Races

F1 Will Not Replace Russian GP As 2022 Calendar Stays At 22 Races

May 21, 2022 / By Zunair Tahir / Automotive News

The decision leaves a two-weekend gap between the finish of the European season on September 11 in Monza and the start of the six-race flyaway series in Singapore on October 2.

Shortly after the Russian invasion on Ukraine began, the Sochi event was cancelled, along with the event’s ongoing contract.

F1 quickly began exploring for alternate locations in order to retain the overall number of races this year at 23.

Qatar was an early candidate. Last year, the country staged a race at the Doha circuit, and it will do so again in 2023. Due to its commitment to the FIFA World Cup, it had intended to skip this year.

The September date was deemed to be early enough to avoid clashing with football tournament preparations, but there were worries about the high heat and its possible influence on the turnout.

The notion of a second race in Singapore a week before the conventional grand prix and perhaps at a different time of day arose throughout the Melbourne weekend.

However, logistical concerns prevented F1 from transferring directly from a European site to Singapore.

The money was crucial to any arrangement. F1 is in a totally different scenario than it was two years ago, when certain venues offered low-cost or even no-cost solutions to keep the number of races up.

A new race would have had to make financial sense for both the teams and F1 itself, given global inflation and substantial increases in freight costs.

The confirmation will be welcomed by the teams, who are facing the difficulty of staying under budget while constructing fresh new vehicles in the midst of an already tight timetable.

Pakistan Is Considering Playing In A Tri-Series Against New Zealand Ahead Of The T20 World Cup

May 19, 2022 / By Zunair Tahir / Sport News

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has formally contacted the PCB for the series, which is expected to take place in the first week of October, with the World Cup starting in the middle of the month.
“The PCB has been asked to play in a tri-series in New Zealand ahead of the T20 World Cup,” said the NZC.
“We are currently examining the invitation and will contact the NZC after a consultation period.”

While Bangladesh, which was also invited by the NZC, has confirmed their participation in the series, Pakistan’s congested September schedule has prevented the PCB from making a quick decision.

Pakistan will compete in the T20 Asia Cup from September 1 to 17, followed by a seven-match T20 series against England, the dates of which have yet to be determined.

Another issue that the PCB is considering is games that are scheduled outside of the pre-determined Future Tours Program. According to reports, the ultimate decision will be taken by the Pakistan team management, lead by Saqlain Mushtaq, and would take into account the players’ workload.

New Zealand’s cricketing ties with Pakistan were harmed when the latter abruptly cancelled their visit to the nation hours before the opening match, citing security concerns.

Dawn has learned that NZC reimbursed the PCB financially for their losses following the Kiwis’ departure. According to insiders, it paid a “significant” sum to cover the PCB’s expenses for the guests’ lodging, security, and venue arrangements. The PCB reacted angrily to New Zealand’s surprise withdrawal from the tour, with chairman Ramiz Raja criticizing the move.

New Zealand vowed to return to Pakistan in December-January for a three-match One-day International series and two Test matches, as well as five one-dyers and as many T20s in April 2023.

According to PML-N legislator Rana Mashood, Ramiz Raja has no future in the PCB

According to PML-N legislator Rana Mashood, Ramiz Raja has no future in the PCB

May 19, 2022 / By Zunair Tahir / Sport News

LAHORE: For the first time since the formation of the new federal government, Rana Mashood Ahmad Khan, a prominent MPA and former Punjab sports minister, has said unequivocally that he does not see Ramiz Raja’s future with the Pakistan Cricket Board in the near future.

Mashood said at a brief press conference on Wednesday that the federal government has agreed to reinstate sports sections in various public sector organization’s, which had been disbanded during Prime Minister Imran Khan’s previous administration.

“I believe a guy should be gracious. They claim to be ethically strong people; if that is the case, then ethics dictate that when their government leaves, they [should] leave immediately with the government,” Mashood said inside the Punjab Sports Board offices.

“I am not seeing him [Ramiz at the PCB] in the near future,” he said, “and when things calm down, a new PCB chairman will arrive at all costs.”

The former minister, who is a major member of the governing PML-N, which controls the federal and provincial governments, also said that the government had approved the request to reinstate sports departments, which was welcomed by concerned sportspeople.

“These departments have been catering to the requirements of thousands of sportspeople across Pakistan for many years.” However, because no progress has been achieved since these departments were closed during the previous four years [of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf administration], our request to reestablish sports departments in public sector organization’s has been accepted,” Mashood said.

He said that many sportspeople who lost employment during the previous administration were unable to continue playing sports owing to age, and that the current administration will establish a sports endowment fund to recompense these players for their financial losses.

Mashood stated, “The system that [sports] departments use to pick excellent players for their teams will remain in the future.”

It should be noted that during the Imran-led administration, many sportspeople, including cricketers, lost their jobs when departmental cricket was abolished.

Cricket, Pakistan’s most popular sport, lost several players who represented various organization’s before sports departments were closed down. Over the years, the same departments have produced world-class cricketers who have gone on to represent the country at the highest international level and have won several awards.

Railways, Wapda, SNGPL, and a few more companies have also been told to shut down their sports divisions by April 31, 2022.

The entire scenario in the country’s sports industry is quite likely to alter once a new federal administration is in place.

Meteoric Dollar Smashes All Records & Reaches Rs200 In The Interbank Market

Meteoric Dollar Smashes All Records & Reaches Rs200 In The Interbank Market

May 19, 2022 / By Zunair Tahir / Business News

US dollar hit Rs200 in interbank trade on Thursday morning, up Rs1 from the previous day’s closing of Rs199, according to statistics from the Forex Association of Pakistan (FAP).

Around 11 a.m., the US dollar hit an all-time high of Rs200, according to the FAP.

The greenback had made a huge gain of more than Rs2 from Tuesday’s close and closed at Rs199 at the end of the session, the latest in a succession of new highs for the US currency since last Tuesday.

While the FAP reported the previous day’s closing rate as Rs199, the State Bank of Pakistan reported the rate as Rs198.39, which is still close to the Rs200 mark that the international currency is expected to reach earlier in the day due to the country’s rising import bill, growing current account deficit, and depleting foreign exchange reserves.

In the open market yesterday, the dollar had already touched Rs200.

‘The Darkest Day’

Some analysts are upset with the achievement. FAP Secretary General Zafar Paracha told Dawn.com that today was the “blackest day” in Pakistan’s history due to the current currency rate.

In a statement to Dawn.com, FAP chairperson Malik Bostan requested the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to issue statutory regulatory instructions for the execution of import restrictions.
Meanwhile, Asad Rizvi, a former Chase Manhattan treasury chief, told Mettis Global, a web-based financial data and analytics portal, that “pension costs, circular debt [of] Rs2.5 trillion, public entities [worth] Rs1.2 trillion, and fiscal deficit of nearly 8% are not sustainable and adding pressure” on the rupee.

Meanwhile, the “independent SBP” was “not bothered by the PKR collapse, perhaps waiting for [an] IMF decision,” according to the Mettis Global report.

Rising oil prices have already increased the country’s oil import expenses in recent weeks, and overall imports are also at an all-time high. Imports soared by 72 percent in April, leaving the government with no room to repair its external balance.

Furthermore, the central bank’s foreign exchange reserves have dropped to $10.3 billion, the lowest level since June 2020.

Currency traders believe the unexpectedly large import bill and little foreign investment were not supportive of the currency rate, while the government already faced a $13 billion current account deficit.

The news comes after Pakistani officials resumed talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) yesterday, in which Finance Minister Miftah Ismail sought to dispel doubts on two fronts: that the new coalition government would stay in power and take tough decisions, as well as that the original fund program’s reforms would be implemented and structural benchmarks would be met.

According to informed sources, the negotiations began on a positive note, with both parties agreeing on important concepts such as separating the state’s economic decision-making from politics.

According to these sources, the government would revise gasoline and energy prices within days and implement a complete ban, rather than increase tariffs, on a total of approximately 30 luxury products, including cars and cellphones, as well as some smaller things, to limit imports and therefore external accounts. These announcements will be made soon in order to forward discussions toward a satisfactory conclusion of the revised program.

The First Online Antique Car Museum In Pakistan Has Opened

May 19, 2022 / By Zunair Tahir / Automotive News

At the unveiling of Pakistan’s first online Antique Cars Museum at the Quaid-i-Azam House Museum here on Saturday, all of the country’s top antique automobile collectors were there, along with their cherished treasures.

Karim Chhapra was there with his resurrected 1924 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, in which the Quaid-i-Azam had also travelled while it was owned by the Nawab of Bahawalpur.

He told Dawn that there has always been a demand for an online museum dedicated to the country’s antique and classic cars. “We, the collectors of these automobiles, were even promised land for a vintage car museum in Karachi, which never materialized.” So, because we don’t have the property, we’ll have to make do with an internet museum,” he explained.

Another antique automobile collector, Liaquat Malik, who was there with his 1961 ivory white Mercedes 190 SL and his brilliant yellow 1951 MG TD, remarked that because it was the age of social media, such a museum was necessary. “We will show the world our automotive legacy,” he stated.

Mansoor-ul-Islam, who is famed for hand-building historic vehicles, arrived in his ivory 1938 Rolls Royce Wraith. He also believed that such a museum would be a fantastic idea.

The idea for the online museum occurred to Shoaib Qureshi during the Covid-19 lockdowns two and a half years ago, he claimed. “We frequently attend vintage car exhibitions to promote our interest and our magnificent automobiles with the general public, but we needed a single platform for this purpose where we could display the majority of our vehicles.” This is the first online museum for vintage automobiles in Pakistan, where we can display the greatest of these vehicles not only in Pakistan but throughout the world,” he added.

“Look about you,” he added, pointing to the Porsches, Jaguars, Rolls Royce’s, Mercedes, and other luxury cars parked in the Quaid-i-Azam House Museum’s u-shaped parking lot.

“There are so many treasures here. Starting with 80 vehicles, antiquecars.com.pk will feature 100 vehicles at a time in order to retain quality above quantity. The oldest automobile on display is a 100-year-old 1922 Amilcar C4 from Islamabad, while the newest is a 35-year-old 1987 BMW two-door coupe from Karachi.

We also have Miss Fatima Jinnah’s two cars, her 1955 Series 62 Convertible Cadillac and her 1965 Mercedes Benz 200, in a virtual museum,” he said, gesturing to the two cars parked in their glass garage right there after restoration by Mohsin Ikram, president of the Vintage and Classic Car Club of Pakistan.

A 1930 Cadillac V16, 1926 Renault, 1930 Packard, 1935 Chevrolet Master, 1949 Lincoln Continental V12, 1954 Austin Healey, 1958 Corvette, 1963 Porsche 356, 1966 Aston Martin DB6 and a 1966 Amphicar are among the other worldwide rare, iconic, and costly antique vehicles in the collection.

They will have branded products in the shape of T-Shirts, hats, and other items in addition to displaying the antique automobiles and telling their histories on the museum website.

The Engineering Development Board (EDB) called a meeting last week with the CEOs of major local automakers, including Hyundai Nishat, to review recent pricing rises.

Before the meeting, EDB instructed the firms to present their cost structures and justifications for price increases. Only a couple of the eleven automakers volunteered their information, and the Ministry of Industries and Production (MoIP) objected strongly. The following are the new pricing, which are effective immediately:

The rate of price increases is far faster than the rate of increase in the US Dollar (USD) versus the Pakistani Rupee, according to the report (PKR). Automakers responded by claiming that increases in other operating costs have also led to price increases.

They pointed out that a freight container that used to cost $3,000 now costs $6,000, as well as rising raw material costs.

Finally, MoIP instructed the remaining firms to submit their cost structures within two days. It said that a follow-up meeting will be held soon in this respect.

Tesla’s India Entrance Strategy Would Be Put On Hold

Tesla’s India Entrance Strategy Would Be Put On Hold

May 16, 2022 / By Zunair Tahir / Automotive News

According to three people familiar with the issue, Tesla has put plans to sell electric cars in India on hold, abandoned a search for showroom space, and moved members of its domestic staff after failing to negotiate reduced import taxes.

Tesla planned to gauge demand by offering lower taxes on electric cars (EVs) imported from production hubs in the United States and China, which resulted in a year of deadlock negotiations with government officials.

The Indian government, on the other hand, is urging Tesla to commit to local manufacturing before lowering import levies, which can be as high as 100%.

According to people familiar with Tesla’s plan, the business set a deadline of February 1 to see if their lobbying paid off, the day India announces its budget and reveals tax revisions.

According to the persons who asked anonymity because the conversations were private, Tesla put its plans to import cars into India on hold when Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government refused to compromise.

According to two sources, Tesla had been exploring for real estate options in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru for months, but that plan has also been put on hold.

Tesla did not reply to an email request for comment. The Indian government did not respond to a request for comment right away. Tesla’s modest team in India has been handed additional responsibilities for other markets.

According to his LinkedIn page, Manuj Khurana, the company’s India policy head, has been working in a new “product” function in San Francisco since March.

In January, Tesla CEO Elon Musk claimed the business was still “working through a lot of challenges with the government” in terms of sales in India. Increased demand for Tesla automobiles in other countries, as well as a dispute over import levies, prompted the adjustment in strategy. Modi has attempted to woo businesses with a “Make in India” campaign, but his transport minister, Nitin Gadkari, claimed in April that Tesla importing vehicles from China would be a “bad suggestion.”

New Delhi, on the other hand, won a triumph in January when Mercedes-Benz announced that it will begin manufacturing one of its electric cars in India.

Tesla had intended to gain a competitive advantage in India’s small but growing electric car industry, which is now dominated by Tata Motors.

Tesla’s starting price of $40,000 (about Rs. 31 lakh) would put it in the premium segment of the Indian market, where sales account just a small proportion of the country’s almost 3 million annual automobile sales.

On April 26, at 5:30 p.m. IST, the event will commence. Poco also used social media to promote the watch, which features a square-shaped dial with curving corners.

At first glance, the Poco Watch looks similar to Apple Watch smartwatches. It will be available with the Poco F4 GT gaming smartphone.

POCO Watch Specifications:

Meanwhile, an online tabloid has released the design and features of the Poco Watch ahead of its official launch.

According to the source, the Poco Watch sports a square AMOLED display with a viewing surface of 1.6 inches. The Apple Watch (41mm) has a 1.9-inch viewing area in comparison.

Users may browse selections throughout the UI using a button on the right spine.
Users will be able to pick choices by scrolling across the screen. The watch is said to come in three different colors: black, blue, and white.

It has a traditional metal-buckle strap attachment technique, which some customers may find outdated for a smartwatch.
According to the source, the Poco Watch would be able to monitor heart rate and blood oxygen levels (SpO2). This watch is expected to weigh around 31 grams and contain a 225mAh battery.

The overall measurements might be 39.1 x 34.4 x 9.98mm. Finally, the smartwatch may feature a 5 ATM water resistance certification.
